The 2022 baseball season won’t start on time. This will be the third short season in a row. Covid isn’t to blame this time. Now it’s delayed because of a dispute between the owners and players over the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
So, now that you know you won’t be able to watch any baseball for a while maybe it’s time for you to check out some soccer! You know me, I’m a HUGE soccer fan. I grew up playing and played in college until a torn ACL ended my career. Now I play some pickup games where we drink beer at halftime and I coach my kids!
This year is going to be a great year for watching soccer, especially here in the Bay Area. 2022 is a World Cup year. But, it’s a World Cup year unlike any other because this year’s tournament is going to be held in November and December. This is due to the extreme heat in the summertime in Qatar, where the World Cup is happening. You’re going to be able to watch World Cup soccer on Thanksgiving! The US Men’s National Team hasn’t qualified yet but the’re close and can secure a spot later this month.
Here’s the remaining schedule for the USMNT World Cup Qualifying:
March 24th vs Mexico at 7:00pm
March 27th vs Panama at 4:00pm
March 30th vs Costa Rica at 6:00pm
Closer to home your San Jose Earthquakes just kicked off their season! I’ve been a Quakes season ticket holder for years and I think PayPal Park is the best sporting venue in the Bay Area. I have young kids so I usually tell them to sit with me in our seats for the first half and for the second half they can play all the kids activities in the grass area. This also gives me the opportunity to have a beer or two at North America’s Largest Outdoor Bar!
The Quakes next home match is this Saturday at 2:30. Go Quakes!
There’s two other local pro teams that I’m super excited about. The Oakland Roots and Monterey Bay FC. The Roots are an exciting team that play their home matches at Laney College in Oakland. They have a fantastic fan base and some of the coolest gear in all of soccer – not just in the US but the entire world!
Monterey Bay FC is a brand new team that will play their first season in 2022. They’re currently renovating Cardinale Stadium on the campus of California State University Monterey Bay. I can’t wait to check it out! There’s going to be a beer garden in the stadium too!
Oakland and Monterey Bay open their season against each other on March 26th in Oakland.
